Recreation Activities
Whether you choose golfing, organized sports, fishing, hunting, hang gliding, sight seeing, photography, hiking, spelunking, backpacking, biking, spectator sports, or just relaxing in one of Sheridan's beautiful parks, there is plenty to do in Sheridan County and plenty of space in which to do it.
Kendrick Park
Kendrick Park is Sheridan's oldest park and includes a swimming pool with water slide, two tennis courts, an amphitheater, a playground, an ice cream stand (summertime), a horseshoe pit, grassy areas for games and leisure activities, and many covered areas with picnic tables for gatherings and/or just relaxing with a good book. The park is located below the Trail End Museum and Mansion and is bordered entirely along one side by Goose Creek .
Whitney Commons
Whitney Commons is located on five acres in the heart of Sheridan--adjacent to the YMCA and the Sheridan Senior Center--across the street from Kendrick Park and across the street from the Public Library. Whitney Commons has something for everyone to enjoy. Several features include a universally accessible play structure designed for fun and safety, a reflecting garden area for quiet moments, an interactive water feature (weather permitting), large turf areas for leisure activities, vintage lighting along walks and bike paths, and closed circuit cameras providing park security and on-line viewing.
Sheridan Recreation District
Sheridan Recreation District is a division of the City of Sheridan and operates Thorne-Rider Park (with baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, a skate board park and a BMX track), Kendrick swimming pool and ice cream stand, Story's Centennial Park , X-Country Ski trail, and sledding hill to name just a few. Youth activities include basketball, little guy football, youth softball, cheerleading, and more. Adult activities include volleyball, softball, aerobics, basketball, and more.
YMCA
Sheridan 's YMCA engages Christian principles in programming for youth and adult activities including classes in health & fitness, arts & crafts, weight training, a myriad of sports, and martial arts. Summertime youth activities include day camps, day trips, and organized sporting activities. The YMCA facilities include 3 gymnasiums, 5 handball/racquetball courts, 2 swimming pools, 3 tennis courts, 2 strength training facilities, a training center, an aerobics gym, athletic/soccer fields, two child care facilities, a healthy kitchen service, indoor jogging/walking track, a family game room and meeting rooms.
Bighorn National Forest
The
Bighorn National Forest is located in north-central Wyoming and in the
Big Horn Mountain Range, one of the sister ranges of the Rocky
Mountains. The Bighorn National Forest provides the most diverse
landscape of all the regions in Wyoming with grasslands, alpine
meadows, valleys, lakes, rolling hills and mountain walls. The Forest
is traversed via three scenic byways and contains 189,000 acres of wilderness, 1,500 miles of trails, miles of streams, multiple
reservoirs, 7 lodges, 14 picnic areas and 32 campgrounds.
Sand Turn is located in the Big Horn Mountains between Dayton and
Burgess Junction on Highway 14. This is a great place to find local
hang gliders when the up-slope currents are just right!
The Big Horn Mountain region boasts some of the best snowmobile and
cross-country ski trails in the United States.
Powder Horn Golf Club
The exclusive, world-class Powder Horn Golf Club is located six miles south of Sheridan amid an exclusive golf community, hiking trails, abundant wildlife, creeks and a trout-stocked lake. It is a 27-hole championship golf course, noted for its 3 distinct nines. The Powder Horn also features a 29,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art clubhouse, and a large practice area for every facet of the game. The Powder Horn is rated #66 on the list of America 's Top 100 Modern Courses.
Kendrick Golf Course
The Kendrick Golf Course is an 18-hole municipal golf course located at the base of the beautiful Big Horn mountains, just three miles west of Sheridan. It is operated by the City of Sheridan and USGA rules govern all play. The facility includes a clubhouse with food service and pro shop.
Sheridan Country Club
The Sheridan Country Club is a 9-hole, par 36 semi-private course located in the City of Sheridan. Facilities include a clubhouse with pro shop and a restaurant.
Big Horn Event Center (formerly Big Horn Equestrian Center)
The
Big Horn Event Center is 12 miles south of Sheridan, near Big
Horn, WY. It is the home of the oldest Polo Club west of the
Mississippi River, the Big Horn Polo Club. Three beautifully manicured, emerald green polo
fields set the stage for polo every Sunday from
late May until the Labor Day Weekend, at which time the season
culminates with the grand finale, the Don King Days tournament and
old-time ranch rodeo. During the off season, the equestrian center area
is available for community engagements and various sports activities
and tournaments such as state soccer tournaments, meetings, retreats,
and weddings.
On Saturdays throughout the summer months, see high-goal polo at the Flying H Polo Club. Preliminaries are held on Thursdays prior to the matches.
